A week in Saigon with kids

Seven days built around nap times, heat, and the fact that nobody wants to negotiate a taxi with a tired four-year-old.

Most family itineraries are written as though children never get hot, bored or hungry at an inconvenient moment. This one is not. It has a rest day in the middle on purpose, it leaves the middle of the afternoon empty because nobody sightsees at two o'clock in Saigon, and it assumes at least one day will be rained on.

  1. Day 1

    Land, and do nothing else

    Afternoon
    Your Buddy meets you inside the airport with a car big enough for the bags, the stroller and everyone in it. Straight to the hotel, unpack, swim if there is a pool.
    Evening
    Dinner close enough to walk to, chosen because the food arrives quickly and there is room for children to move.

  2. Day 2

    The gentle first day

    Morning
    A slow start, then the walking street and the old Central Post Office while it is still cool, with the book street beside it for a shaded half hour.
    Afternoon
    Back at the hotel for the hottest part of the day. This is deliberate.
    Evening
    An early dinner in District 1 and an ice cream on the walk home.

    Handled for you. A route that stays in the shade, and an indoor plan B that is ready before it rains.

  3. Day 3

    Animals first, water after

    Morning
    The zoo and botanical gardens in the first cool hours, while the animals and the children are both awake.
    Afternoon
    A water park, or the hotel pool, depending on the ages and on how the morning actually went.
    Evening
    Dinner somewhere the children's food comes out first.

    Handled for you. Tickets bought ahead, and a driver already waiting when the smallest one has had enough.

  4. Day 4

    A day out of the city

    All day
    The Mekong Delta: a boat, a workshop where coconut candy is made by hand, lunch under a fan, and a long quiet drive back while somebody sleeps.
    Instead
    If your children do not travel well, the Can Gio mangroves are far closer and the boat is shorter. Your Buddy will tell you honestly which one suits your family.

    Handled for you. The whole day, including the decision about whether to do it at all.

  5. Day 5

    The rest day, on purpose

    Morning
    Nothing. A late breakfast.
    Afternoon
    The leafy riverside neighbourhood across the bridge, where the cafes have gardens and there is room to run without holding anyone's hand.
    Evening
    A quiet dinner near the hotel.

    Handled for you. The thing most itineraries leave out: a day with nothing in it.

  6. Day 6

    History, at a child's pace

    Morning
    The Independence Palace, which children tend to like because it is a building full of rooms with a tank in the garden.
    Afternoon
    One hour in Ben Thanh Market, then out again before it turns hot and loud.
    Evening
    A family cooking class, or dinner and an early night before the flight.

    Handled for you. An honest word about the War Remnants Museum. It is heavy, many families skip it, and your Buddy will say so rather than sell it to you.

  7. Day 7

    The last morning

    Morning
    Whatever your children asked to do a second time. It is usually the pool.
    Afternoon
    Checkout, bags and the airport, with the traffic counted properly rather than optimistically.

    Handled for you. Timing, so nobody spends the last hour anxious.
